Palo Alto Networks: Our Review...

Inventors of the ‘Next Generation Firewall’ Palo Alto Networks are a very special company in that (in our opinion!) they have managed to lead the entire Firewall industry to a more intelligent / behavioral type of application security product – a complete shift from the virtual moat and drawbridge approach. Whilst the old school ‘big’ vendors were still banging on about the importance of working out what is trusted, and what is not – then converting this out into an unmanageably brittle set of network based rules, the majority of the bad guys out there were simply dreaming up new ways of breaking them.

The castle / moat analogy is a great one because, look what happened. Initially, arrows bounce off walls, and yes the occasional dead sheep gets flung over on a trebuchet, but on the whole, you’re secure. Then someone invents gunpowder, and all of a sudden, previously impregnable walls now get blasted to smithereens.

In the context of up to date IT security, todays gunpowder are the DDoSes, the botnets, and application borne threats, all of which are designed to come in on your ‘trusted’ entry points.

So it’s really true that todays Palo Alto Networks' firewall owner understands the need to check everything, and trust no one.
