Sios: Our Review...

There is some overlap in a number of the data replication / DR products we like working with – however, SIOS are a vendor which make quite an interesting suite of protection applications that work seamlessly to provide cluster-like H/A (LifeKeeper) and off site replication / DR (DataKeeper). It’s block level architecture is ideal for protecting large numbers of files just like your SAN could, but without the administrative overhead of a SAN (not forgetting annual costs in subs and support).

This is another of our recommended products which we would deem as extremely ‘Toyota HiLux’ like. The user interface looks rather simple & sparse, and it’s not exactly the most intuitive either, however the software is extremely predictable, which as it’s looking after your core services and data replication, is sort of what’s important. So we would recommend SIOS and SteelEye Protection Suite in particular if you needed to H/A a large number (millions) of small files in a production facility which did not have cluster enabled infrastructure, and at the same time, needed to simultaneously replicate all of these files to an off site repository, for pretty much instant failover.

ACC have written a number of extremely useful PRTG multi channel scripts for the monitoring of ‘datareps’ protected by SPS DataKeeper, as this solutions reporting and monitoring is a little bit lacking for our standards….
